I have volunteered with Habitat for Humanity many times over the years. I'm not a trained builder, but through the guidance of experts, I have lent my support to paint, clean and lay soffit, facisa, and siding. This time I am excited to join with WOMEN to provide hands on support again this year with Women Build 2022. Why is it important for women to be involved in housing equity initiatives? Women on average pay more for mortgages than men. Women, particularly minority women, experience higher rates of subprime lending than men and tend to have weaker credit profiles, although their credit performances tend to be better than men. As a single woman I think a lot about single versus dual income and the impact that has on my personal financial and economic decisions and planning. When I imagine what having kids would do to that, it adds a new layer. Then I think about the privilege that I hold with full-time employment, degrees, family support in times of transitions and more, it is humbling. Housing is the largest part of my own financial reality and to know that organizations like Habitat for Humanity exist to meet that need for thousands of families seeking that stability, it motivates me to get involved.
